Emotional navigation in the age of AI
A new age needs a new pathway
Jul 1, 2026

Traditional emotional intelligence development models were designed for a different era and, while they remain valuable, they simply do not reflect the realities of today’s workplace.
Since the late 1980s, Emotional Intelligence has helped us understand that emotions have an impact on behaviour, decision-making and relationships. It shifted the conversation beyond technical expertise and reminded us that how we interact with people is just as important as what we know.
That has not changed, yet the environment in which those capabilities are applied has changed dramatically. Today’s workplaces are more connected, more complex and evolving more rapidly than ever before. Artificial Intelligence is reshaping the way we access information, solve problems and make decisions, while hybrid work, global teams and constant change continue to transform the way people communicate, collaborate and lead.
The human side of work is becoming more important
As technology becomes more intelligent, many organisations are discovering that their greatest challenges are becoming less technical and more human centred. Building trust, creating psychologically safe workplaces, retaining talented people, and helping teams perform consistently all depend on the way people navigate emotions, both their own and those of others.
Emotional Intelligence has therefore never been more important, yet many organisations are still trying to develop it using approaches that were designed for a very different landscape.
Why traditional development can feel overwhelming
Over the years, Emotional Intelligence models have continued to evolve, although in many cases that evolution has brought greater complexity. Competencies have expanded, terminology has changed and frameworks have grown until development itself can feel overwhelming. Rather than providing a clear pathway for growth, many people are left wondering which competencies matter most, where they should begin and how everything fits together.
At the same time, development opportunities have become shorter. Organisations are asking people to learn more in less time while balancing increasing workloads and constant change. There is less capacity for lengthy theory and greater demand for practical development that creates meaningful behavioural change.
That is not a criticism of Emotional Intelligence, it is simply recognition that the world has changed.
When the terrain changes, the map needs to change
Imagine setting out on a journey using a map that was created decades ago. The destination would still be the same, yet the terrain would have changed. New roads would have been built, familiar landmarks would have disappeared, and the route would require different decisions along the way. Without an updated map, even an experienced traveller can find the journey more difficult than it needs to be.
Developing Emotional Intelligence today is no different.
The destination remains exactly the same. We still want people who understand themselves, respond well under pressure, build strong relationships and create workplaces where others can thrive. What has changed is the journey, which is why the way we develop Emotional Intelligence also needs to evolve.
That is why we developed the Emotional Navigation Roadmap™.
Rather than adding another complex model to an already crowded field, the Emotional Navigation Roadmap™ provides a simplified framework for navigating the complexities of human emotions, building psychological safety, retaining your top talent, and elevating your team’s performance and results.
It has been designed using modern language, organised into a practical development pathway, and created for today’s workplace, where meaningful progress often needs to happen through short, focused learning experiences rather than lengthy development programs. Instead of overwhelming people with an ever-expanding list of competencies, it provides a clearer pathway that helps individuals, leaders and teams strengthen emotional and social intelligence progressively over time.
A new way of developing Emotional Intelligence
This article marks the beginning of a new series exploring the thinking behind the Emotional Navigation Roadmap™ and the practical capabilities that support it. Along the way, we’ll examine how these capabilities influence behaviour, shape culture, and improve organisational performance in the age of AI.
